A lot of sites are linking to adobe.com's page to download free PDF reader. Therefore, it's 'automatically' ranked high because of backlinks from other sites. Of course there could be other reasons why it's ranked #1 but the fact that it has so many backlinks plays a huge role.

The more backlinks you can get to your site, THE BETTER IT IS. One of the ways to achieve this for free is submitting to online directories so that they'll have a link linking to your url.

You see, some directories DO NOT require 2-way linking. Meaning, they could be linking to you and you don't need to link to them.

Also, most directories are "huge" sites so their backlinks will give more 'weight' and level of importance.
